Conferences
There are many conferences related to occupational and environmental health every year, throughout the world. The following are some sources of information about them:
- A list of conferences is maintained by the BC Environmental and Occupational Health Research Network.
- The SOEH website often lists upcoming conferences and abstract deadlines on the home page.
- Funding is available for students to attend conferences.
Several conferences are described below, either because they are local, are being hosted by the School, or are often attended by School students.
Semiahmoo - The Annual UBC & University of Washington Occupational &
Environmental Health Conference - January 8th and 9th, 2009
View the program of events and registration form
This 2-day conference is jointly sponsored by units involved in this research area at our two universities. It is usually held in the first week of January and is attended by 75 to 100 students and faculty. The atmosphere is very relaxed; many students have used this as an occasion to present their project or research work.
SOEH covers the registration fees of all first year students who choose to attend the joint meeting, but does not cover room charges. Second year students are also welcome to attend, but are responsible for finding their own funding (e.g., from their supervisors) or funding themselves.
This conference includes the annual David Bates lecture, honoring one of the pioneers of environmental health research in British Columbia. Dr. Bates gave the inaugural lecture in 2006. Subsequent lecturers have been:
- David Wegman, University of Massachusetts at Lowell, "Aging and Globalization from an OH Perspective", 2007
- Moira Chan-Yeung, University of Hong Kong, "Western red cedar asthma", 2008
- Dr. Trevor Ogden, Editor in Chief of the Annals of Occupational Hygiene, 2009
Acoustics Week in Canada
The annual conference of the Canadian Acoustical Association is being chaired by Dr. Murray Hodgson and will be held in Vancouver, October 6-8, 2008. The Northwest Occupational Health Conference
The Northwest Occupational Health Conference is held in the fall each year in Washington or Oregon. This conference is sponsored by the professional associations for occupational health nurses, occupational physicians, and industrial hygienists in the Pacific-Northwest of the United States. Several hundred people attend. Our faculty are frequent speakers at this meeting. For more information or if you would like to receive a registration brochure when it is available please email administrator@pnsaiha.org.
The BC and Yukon American Industrial Hygiene Association Local
Section Annual General Meeting
This is a one-day conference usually held in March in Vancouver. There are speakers on many technical and regulatory topics, mainly by practitioners from British Columbia. This event is very inexpensive, and a great venue for getting to know local hygienists. Attended by 50 to 100 people every year.
American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exhibition (AIHCE)
This is the annual meeting of two large American professional associations, the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, attended by about 10,000 people. The call for abstracts is in October, though there is a second deadline for students only mid-winter; the conference is usually held in May or June.
